What was the width of Noah’s Ark in the Genesis measurements?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s Ark was 50 cubits wide.

Genesis 6:15 gives three principal dimensions for the Ark: 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. The width is therefore one-sixth of the stated length and greater than the height. These measurements describe the Ark’s overall proportions rather than providing a modern engineering blueprint.

Because the ancient cubit varied by place and period, converting the width into meters is approximate. Using a commonly cited range of about 45 to 50 centimeters per cubit produces a width of roughly 22.5 to 25 meters. The text itself does not specify which cubit standard was intended.

The width is sometimes confused with the Ark’s height because both numbers are smaller than 300. Remembering the sequence—length 300, width 50, height 30—keeps the three measurements distinct.
