What was the width of Noah’s Ark in Genesis, measured in cubits?

The story behind the answer

Genesis gives Noah’s Ark a width of 50 cubits.

Genesis 6:15 specifies the Ark’s main dimensions as 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. These measurements are part of God’s instructions to Noah before the Flood. The biblical passage does not define the cubit in that chapter, so converting the Ark into modern units requires choosing an estimated ancient cubit length.

A commonly used estimate places the Ark at roughly 150 meters long, 25 meters wide, and 15 meters high, but exact modern conversions vary. The width is therefore most securely reported in the original unit: 50 cubits.

This dimension is distinct from the Ark’s length, which is often the number remembered in popular summaries. The proportions—six times as long as wide and ten times as long as high—have also prompted comparisons with stable barge-like forms. Such comparisons do not independently prove the biblical account; they simply examine the stated dimensions as a vessel design.
