What was the total number of years Noah lived, according to Genesis?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah lived for a total of 950 years.

Genesis 9:29 gives Noah’s lifespan as 950 years and then says he died. This total is different from the 600 years assigned to him when the flood began. The biblical chronology therefore places 350 additional years between the flood’s beginning and Noah’s death.

Noah’s lifespan belongs to the long-lived genealogical world of Genesis. Other figures in the same early genealogy are also assigned exceptionally high ages, although Noah is not the oldest person named in the Bible. Genesis 5:27 gives Methuselah a lifespan of 969 years.

The number 950 should not be confused with the 969 associated with Methuselah, or with Noah’s age at the flood. These are separate chronological details. Genesis presents Noah as a transitional figure: he belongs to the generations before the flood, survives it with his family, and appears afterward in the stories of the covenant, vineyard, and his sons.
