Load was the Metallica album released after The Black Album to feature Jason Newsted as bassist.
The Black Album was released in 1991, and Load followed on June 4, 1996. Newsted remained Metallica’s bassist during the intervening years and performed on Load, which became the band’s sixth studio album.
Load continued the collaboration with producer Bob Rock but moved further from Metallica’s earlier thrash-metal sound. The band adopted a harder rock direction, and its songs reflected influences including blues rock, country rock, Southern rock, alternative rock, and grunge.
Reload arrived the following year and used additional material from the same broad writing and recording period. That chronology makes Reload a plausible but incorrect answer: it was another Newsted-era studio album, but it was not the first one after The Black Album. S&M was a later live album with orchestral performances.
