What was the title of Metallica’s 1992 documentary about making The Black Album and touring afterward?

The story behind the answer

A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica is the 1992 documentary about making The Black Album and touring afterward.

The two-part film follows the band through the album’s demanding recording process and into the major tours that followed its release. It includes studio discussions with producer Bob Rock, footage of the “Enter Sandman” video, and performances from several important concerts. The documentary therefore serves as a behind-the-scenes record of Metallica’s transition into worldwide stadium-level success.

Adam Dubin directed the film, and Juliana Roberts produced it. It was released on November 17, 1992, as a double VHS package with a total listed length of 236 minutes. A later DVD edition collected both parts in one release.

The title is sometimes confused with Some Kind of Monster, a later documentary centered mainly on the troubled creation of St. Anger. Cliff ’Em All is an earlier 1987 video focused on footage associated with bassist Cliff Burton, not the Black Album sessions.
