Beyoncé’s 2020 visual album connected to The Lion King: The Gift was Black Is King.
Black Is King premiered on Disney+ on July 31, 2020. Beyoncé wrote, directed, and executive-produced the project, which uses music from The Lion King: The Gift as the basis for a series of interconnected visual performances and narratives.
The film reinterprets themes from The Lion King through African and African-diaspora imagery. It celebrates Black identity, family, ancestry, community, fashion, dance, and cultural continuity. Artists including Blue Ivy Carter, Jay-Z, Tina Knowles-Lawson, and several musicians from The Gift appear in the project.
Black Is King is not the same as Lemonade, which was released in 2016 and had its own film presentation. It is also distinct from Homecoming, Beyoncé’s 2019 concert documentary about her 2018 Coachella performance. The project received Grammy recognition through its music, including a win for Best Music Film.
