Newcastle United v Liverpool was scheduled to kick off at 16:30 BST in the 2026–27 Premier League opener.
The match was set for Sunday 23 August 2026 and was the later of the two Sunday afternoon fixtures. Manchester City v Bournemouth and Brighton & Hove Albion v Aston Villa were both scheduled for 14:00 BST before Newcastle hosted Liverpool.
Newcastle’s home ground was St James’ Park, one of the most prominent stadiums in English football. Liverpool’s opening-round trip therefore sent the visitors to the north-east rather than beginning at Anfield.
The time is easy to confuse with the Saturday evening fixture Brentford v Tottenham Hotspur, which was scheduled for 17:30 BST. It also differs from the Monday closing fixture, Fulham v Chelsea, listed for 20:00 BST.
