What was the PlayStation Vita’s launch date in Japan?

The story behind the answer

The PlayStation Vita launched in Japan on 17 December 2011.

Sony released the Vita first in Japan before launching it in Europe and North America on 22 February 2012. The handheld featured a five-inch OLED touchscreen on its original model, two analog sticks, cameras, and a rear touch pad. It used proprietary flash-based game cards rather than the UMDs associated with the PlayStation Portable.

The Japanese launch date is often mixed up with the Vita’s international launch date. Sony also released a later LCD-based revision, commonly called the PS Vita 2000, in Japan in 2013. That redesign changed the screen and body but did not change the original system’s initial release date.
