The PlayStation 4's original development codename was Orbis.
Sony used Orbis internally while developing the console before publicly revealing the PlayStation 4 name. The codename appeared in early reporting about the system and was paired with the idea that the console would be a major platform for digital services and connected gaming.
The final console was announced in February 2013 and launched later that year. Its architecture used an AMD accelerated processing unit combining x86-64 CPU cores with a Radeon-based graphics processor, a significant change from the specialised Cell-based design used by PlayStation 3.
Orbis is sometimes confused with other internal names connected with Sony products or game projects. It was not the name of a retail model, operating system, controller, or online service. The consumer product was simply branded PlayStation 4, while Orbis remained a development codename associated with its pre-release history.
