What was the PlayStation 3's main processor architecture called?

The story behind the answer

The PlayStation 3's main processor architecture was called the Cell Broadband Engine.

Sony developed the Cell architecture with IBM and Toshiba, and the PlayStation 3 used a Cell Broadband Engine processor commonly abbreviated as Cell or CBE. It combined a Power Processing Element with multiple Synergistic Processing Elements, allowing specialized parallel processing for demanding game and multimedia workloads.

The architecture was powerful but substantially different from the processors used in ordinary personal computers. Developers had to divide suitable tasks across the processing elements, which made the PS3 notably challenging to program early in its life. Later development tools and experience improved results.

The wrong answers reflect processors from other PlayStation generations. The PlayStation 2 used the Emotion Engine, the original PlayStation used the MIPS-based R3000A, and the PlayStation 4 used an AMD Jaguar-based CPU. Cell therefore identifies the PS3 generation specifically.
