What was the PlayStation 2's most successful game by worldwide sales?

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was the best-selling game released for the PlayStation 2, with more than 17 million copies sold worldwide.

Rockstar North developed San Andreas, and Rockstar Games published it in 2004. Set in the fictional US states of San Andreas, the game follows Carl “CJ” Johnson through an open-world story influenced by early-1990s California. Its large map, vehicle variety, character customization, and radio stations made it a major PlayStation 2 release.

The closest common mix-up is Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, another enormous PlayStation 2 success. Gran Turismo 3 sold more than 14 million copies and was one of the console’s defining launch-era games, but San Andreas is generally credited with the higher total.

San Andreas was also released for Xbox and Windows, although the PlayStation 2 version was especially important to its commercial performance.
