What was the original working title for Metallica's 1991 album before the band chose its self-titled name?

The story behind the answer

The original working title for Metallica's 1991 album was Married to Metal.

The phrase emerged while Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich, and Jason Newsted were going through divorces during the album's creation. It was treated as a running joke rather than a final title, and the band eventually decided on the simpler eponymous name Metallica.

Other possibilities were also discussed, including Five and the title of one of the songs. Choosing Metallica kept the presentation direct and avoided turning the album title into a separate concept from the band itself.

The final packaging created a different identity in popular culture. Because the first edition used nearly invisible black embossing for the logo and snake, listeners began calling it The Black Album. That nickname became more famous than the abandoned working title.
