What was the original title of the first Fast & Furious film during production?

The story behind the answer

The original production title of the first Fast & Furious film was Redline.

The 2001 movie was ultimately released as The Fast and the Furious, but Redline was used as its working title during development. The term refers to the upper limit of an engine’s safe operating range and fits the film’s focus on performance cars and illegal street racing.

The film stars Paul Walker as undercover police officer Brian O’Conner and Vin Diesel as street racer Dominic Toretto. Its story was inspired in part by an article about underground street racing in Los Angeles.

Redline is not the movie’s final title and should not be confused with a separate 2007 film called Redline. The released title established the name later used for the broader franchise.
