What was the original retail name of Sony’s PlayStation 5 digital-only model?

The story behind the answer

Sony’s original disc-free console was officially called the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.

Sony announced two PlayStation 5 models in 2020: a standard version with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive and a Digital Edition without a disc drive. The Digital Edition was designed for players who purchase and download games through the PlayStation Store or use other digital distribution methods.

Removing the optical drive allowed Sony to offer a lower launch price than the disc-equipped model. However, the two launch versions shared the same broad hardware generation and played the same PlayStation 5 software library.

The Digital Edition should not be confused with the later slimmer PlayStation 5 model introduced in 2023, which used a detachable disc drive design. “PS5 Slim” is a common informal label for that later revision, not the original official name of Sony’s first disc-free PS5.
