What was the original name of the Houston group that developed into Destiny’s Child?

The story behind the answer

The Houston group that developed into Destiny’s Child was originally called Girl’s Tyme.

Girl’s Tyme formed in Houston in 1990, bringing together Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and several other young singers at different points in its early history. The group competed on the television talent program Star Search in 1993, although it did not win.

After changes in membership and management, the group signed with Columbia Records and became Destiny’s Child. The name change marked the beginning of the lineup and recording career most audiences recognize, including the later trio of Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams.

Girl’s Tyme is sometimes treated as simply an early nickname for Destiny’s Child, but it was the group’s original name during its formative Houston years. The spelling is usually written with an apostrophe in “Girl’s” and a “y” in “Tyme,” making it distinct from generic phrases such as “Girl Time.”
