Beyoncé’s girl group was originally called Girl’s Tyme before it became Destiny’s Child.
The group formed in Houston, Texas, in the early 1990s, while its members were still children and teenagers. Beyoncé and LaTavia Roberson were among the original members, and the group later included Kelly Rowland and LeToya Luckett. Girl’s Tyme competed on the television talent show Star Search in 1993, although it did not win.
The group went through several lineup changes and name changes before signing with Columbia Records. The name Destiny’s Child became established in the late 1990s, when the group began releasing successful recordings. Its 1998 debut single, “No, No, No,” helped introduce the group to a wider audience.
A common mix-up is to treat Destiny’s Child as Beyoncé’s first professional group under that name. In fact, the earlier Girl’s Tyme period was an important part of the group’s development and predates its major-label career.
