What was the only opening named as a window in Noah’s Ark in the Genesis account?

The story behind the answer

Genesis describes Noah’s Ark as having a window one cubit high.

Genesis 6:16 gives the ark a window, or opening, and says that Noah was to finish it to a cubit above. English translations differ in how they render the surrounding construction terms, but the traditional measurement is one cubit. The passage also mentions a door in the side and three decks.

The Hebrew wording has generated translation and interpretation questions because ancient building terminology does not map perfectly onto modern architectural language. Some translations describe a roof or opening rather than a conventional glazed window. Nevertheless, the familiar biblical measurement associated with the ark’s window is one cubit.

The detail is easy to confuse with the dove episode in Genesis 8. Noah later opened the ark’s window when sending out birds to test whether the waters had receded, but that event does not provide a different height or number of windows. Genesis gives a single named window or opening in the construction instructions.
