What was the official mascot of the 1966 FIFA World Cup?

The story behind the answer

World Cup Willie was the official mascot of the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England.

Willie was depicted as a friendly English lion wearing a Union Jack shirt with “WORLD CUP” across the front. The design connected the character to the host nation while giving the tournament a memorable figure that could appear on posters, souvenirs, television promotions and merchandise.

The 1966 competition is widely credited with starting the FIFA World Cup mascot tradition. Willie’s commercial and public popularity helped demonstrate how a sporting event could use a character to build identity beyond the matches themselves. Later tournaments adopted increasingly varied mascots, including animals, children and stylized figures.

Footix belonged to the 1998 World Cup in France, Ciao represented Italy 1990, and Striker was the mascot for the United States tournament in 1994. World Cup Willie therefore predates all three and remains one of the most recognizable tournament mascots.
