The Mirror Ball Lemon
Answer
The Mirror Ball Lemon
U2’s giant lemon-shaped stage prop during the PopMart Tour was called the Mirror Ball Lemon.
The PopMart Tour ran from 1997 to 1998 and deliberately presented U2’s concerts as an exaggerated supermarket-themed spectacle. The production included a huge golden arch, a massive video screen, a large olive on a cocktail stick, and the reflective lemon that served as one of the show’s signature visual jokes.
The lemon was not merely decorative. At selected concerts, it opened and released a mirror ball, adding another deliberately oversized image to a production built around consumer culture and pop-art references. The tour’s design was created by Willie Williams, who had also worked on U2’s earlier Zoo TV productions.
Because the tour used several oversized food and shopping images, the lemon is sometimes confused with the olive or the giant arch. Its formal name was the Mirror Ball Lemon.
