What was the name of the PlayStation 3’s original online store?

The story behind the answer

The PlayStation 3’s original online storefront was called the PlayStation Store.

Sony launched the PlayStation Store in 2006 as a digital marketplace connected to the PlayStation Network. PlayStation 3 owners could use it to download games, demos, add-on content, themes, trailers, and other media directly to the console.

The store formed part of Sony’s broader shift toward digital distribution during the seventh console generation. It also gave developers a way to release smaller downloadable titles alongside full retail games sold on discs.

The name is sometimes confused with PlayStation Network, which is the wider online service rather than the storefront itself. PlayStation Network handled account access and online connectivity, while PlayStation Store referred specifically to the digital shopping service. Sony later expanded the same store ecosystem to other PlayStation devices.
