Metallica played at Tushino Airfield in Moscow during the 1991 Monsters of Rock tour.
The concert took place on September 28, 1991, shortly after The Black Album was released. It was part of a major festival bill and became one of the most frequently discussed performances connected with the album’s breakthrough period.
The event was described as the first free outdoor Western rock concert in Soviet history. Estimates of attendance vary substantially, with commonly cited figures ranging from about 150,000 to 500,000 people; unofficial claims have reached much higher numbers. The uncertainty comes from the enormous open-air setting and the absence of a single definitive attendance count.
Tushino Airfield is sometimes confused with Moscow’s major airports or stadiums. It was an airfield in the Tushino district, chosen as the site for an extraordinary large-scale concert during the final months of the Soviet Union.
