What was the name of the island launch site used for SpaceX’s Falcon 1 rockets?
Answer
Omelek Island
Answer
Omelek Island
SpaceX launched its Falcon 1 rockets from Omelek Island in the Kwajalein Atoll.
Omelek is part of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and lies within the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site. SpaceX selected the remote location because it offered a suitable equatorial launch position and an existing military test range.
The first four Falcon 1 launches took place from Omelek. The first three failed, but the fourth flight, on 28 September 2008, successfully reached orbit and made SpaceX the first privately funded, liquid-fueled rocket company to do so.
Omelek is sometimes confused with SpaceX’s later launch sites in Florida, California, and Texas. Unlike those facilities, it was used only during Falcon 1’s early development and is no longer SpaceX’s active orbital launch base.
