Before Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé belonged to a Houston girl group called Girl’s Tyme.
Girl’s Tyme formed in 1990 and included Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and Támar Davis at different points in its early history. The group competed on the television talent show Star Search in 1993, although it did not win. That setback became part of the group’s early development rather than its endpoint.
The act later changed its name to Destiny, and then Destiny’s Child. Its lineup and management evolved before the group secured a recording deal and began releasing music commercially. Beyoncé’s father, Mathew Knowles, managed the group during its rise.
A common mix-up is treating Girl’s Tyme as a separate professional era unrelated to Destiny’s Child. It was the childhood and teenage group from which Destiny’s Child developed, making the name an important part of Beyoncé’s pre-fame biography.
