Beresheet was the first privately funded spacecraft to enter orbit around the Moon.
The robotic lander was developed by the Israeli nonprofit SpaceIL with support from Israel Aerospace Industries. It launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 in February 2019 as a rideshare payload and used a series of increasingly distant Earth orbits to conserve fuel before heading to the Moon.
Beresheet successfully entered lunar orbit in April 2019, an important achievement for a privately funded lunar project. However, its landing attempt on 11 April 2019 failed when the main engine stopped during the descent, and the spacecraft crashed onto the lunar surface.
It is often confused with later commercial landers that achieved soft landings. Beresheet reached lunar orbit and attempted a landing, but it did not complete a controlled touchdown.
