What was the name of SpaceX’s first successful orbital launch, achieved in September 2008?
Answer
Falcon 1 Flight 4
Answer
Falcon 1 Flight 4
SpaceX’s first successful orbital launch was Falcon 1 Flight 4, launched on 28 September 2008.
The mission lifted off from Omelek Island in the Kwajalein Atoll and placed a dummy payload into low Earth orbit. It followed three failed Falcon 1 attempts, making the success especially important for SpaceX’s survival as a launch company. Falcon 1 Flight 4 demonstrated that a privately developed, liquid-fueled orbital rocket could reach space.
The mission is sometimes confused with Falcon 1 Flight 5, which also reached orbit and carried the Malaysian RazakSAT satellite in 2009. Flight 4, however, was the first successful orbital attempt. SpaceX later retired Falcon 1 and concentrated on the much larger Falcon 9, which became the company’s main launch vehicle for satellites, cargo, and crew.
