Sony named its first official PlayStation redesign the PS one.
The PS one launched in 2000 as a smaller, lighter version of the original PlayStation. It retained compatibility with the original console’s game library while using a substantially more compact case. Sony also sold an optional LCD screen that could attach to the system, making the setup suitable for portable use even though the PS one itself required external power.
The redesign arrived near the beginning of the PlayStation 2 era and extended the commercial life of the original hardware. Its rounded white-gray appearance distinguished it from the larger, darker launch model.
The PS one should not be confused with the PlayStation Classic, a miniature retro console released in 2018 with pre-installed games. “PS one” refers to the 2000 hardware revision of the original PlayStation.
