McDonald’s original restaurant mascot, introduced in 1948 as a speeding chef, was Speedee.
Speedee represented the McDonald brothers’ Speedee Service System, the fast, standardized preparation method introduced at their San Bernardino restaurant. The character was shown wearing a chef’s hat and holding a hamburger, emphasizing quick service rather than the family-oriented character world McDonald’s later developed.
Speedee was gradually replaced by the Golden Arches as McDonald’s primary visual identity. Ronald McDonald and other McDonaldland characters later became more prominent in advertising, but Speedee is an important early link between the restaurant’s name, its service promise, and its branding. Speedee is sometimes confused with later mascots because both appeared in advertising, but Speedee predates Ronald McDonald by more than a decade.
