Which McDonald’s character was the brand’s hamburger-shaped mayor?

The story behind the answer

Mayor McCheese was McDonaldland’s hamburger-shaped mayor.

The character appeared as a large hamburger with a face, arms, legs, and a mayoral sash. He was one of the central figures in McDonald’s fantasy advertising world, where food-inspired characters interacted with Ronald McDonald and other mascots.

Mayor McCheese helped turn the restaurant’s menu imagery into a broader brand universe. His design made the connection between McDonald’s food and its advertising especially direct: the character was literally a hamburger presented as a civic leader.

He is sometimes confused with Officer Big Mac, another McDonaldland character whose name referenced the Big Mac sandwich. The Hamburglar and Captain Crook were also members of the same advertising world, but neither served as its hamburger-shaped mayor.
