McDonaldland was the fictional world McDonald’s created for its character advertising in 1971.
The setting gave McDonald’s mascots a shared environment in which they could appear in commercials, promotions, and licensed products. Ronald McDonald served as the central human-like figure, while characters including the Hamburglar, Grimace, Mayor McCheese, and Officer Big Mac populated the landscape. Each character helped turn menu items or restaurant features into parts of an imaginative story world.
McDonaldland is sometimes confused with McWorld, a later advertising concept associated with McDonald’s global brand. McDonaldland was the earlier character-based setting, built around fantastical locations and personified food-related figures. Its imagery was particularly prominent in children’s marketing during the 1970s and 1980s.
The campaign shows how McDonald’s branding moved beyond a logo and slogan. By giving its mascots recurring identities and relationships, the company created a recognizable narrative universe that could be adapted across television, packaging, toys, and restaurant promotions.
