McDonald’s first national children’s meal promotion, launched in 1979, was the Happy Meal.
The Happy Meal combined a child-sized portion of food with a toy or other promotional item. McDonald’s introduced it nationally after regional experiments demonstrated that a packaged children’s offering could make the restaurant more appealing to families. Its colorful box became an important piece of McDonald’s branding in its own right.
The promotion is sometimes confused with earlier regional children’s menus or with later toy tie-ins. The defining feature of the Happy Meal was the standardized branded meal package introduced nationally in 1979. Its name also made the product easy for children to request and easy for parents to recognize.
Over time, Happy Meal promotions became closely connected with films, television characters, and McDonald’s own fictional characters. The product helped extend the company’s branding beyond signs and advertising into packaging and collectible promotional objects.
