The Arch Deluxe was McDonald’s premium hamburger introduced in 1996 as an upscale branding experiment.
McDonald’s marketed the Arch Deluxe toward adults rather than primarily toward children and families. Its advertising emphasized a more sophisticated taste, including a special sauce and a quarter-pound beef patty. The campaign was unusually expensive and used the Golden Arches in a deliberately more adult, premium positioning.
The product became known for its “burger with the grown-up taste” message. Despite extensive promotion, it did not achieve the sales McDonald’s expected and was eventually discontinued in many markets. It remains a frequently cited example of a fast-food brand attempting to move upscale.
The Arch Deluxe is sometimes confused with Big N’ Tasty, another McDonald’s burger introduced during the 1990s. The Big N’ Tasty was a different sandwich and campaign. The Arch Deluxe is specifically the 1996 premium burger associated with adult-targeted branding.
