McDonald’s first mascot, introduced in 1948, was Speedee.
Speedee was a chef character whose name referred to the McDonald brothers’ Speedee Service System. That system emphasized preparing food quickly and consistently, rather than operating like a traditional full-service restaurant.
The character appeared in early McDonald’s branding before Ronald McDonald became the company’s best-known mascot. Speedee is sometimes confused with later McDonald’s characters, especially the Hamburglar, but the two belonged to different eras of the brand’s advertising.
Speedee’s connection to the restaurant’s original service model makes him important in McDonald’s branding history. The mascot represented speed as a central selling point, while later campaigns increasingly emphasized family entertainment, recognizable characters, and the Golden Arches.
