McDonaldland was the fictional world used in McDonald's commercials featuring Ronald McDonald and other mascots.
McDonald's developed McDonaldland as a fantasy setting for advertising in the early 1970s. It contained characters with names and designs linked to the company's menu and restaurant identity. Ronald McDonald served as the central figure, while characters such as Grimace, the Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese, and Birdie the Early Bird appeared in the same imagined world.
The setting gave McDonald's a way to connect separate commercials through recurring locations, characters, and story patterns. Rather than presenting every advertisement as an unrelated product message, the company could build a recognizable branded universe that especially appealed to children.
McDonaldland is sometimes used loosely to describe all McDonald's character advertising, but the term specifically refers to the fictional setting. It should not be confused with the restaurant chain itself, the McDonald's PlayPlace concept, or the separate brand name “McCafe.”
