What was the name of Kenner’s mail-in certificate promotion for its first Star Wars action figures?

The story behind the answer

Kenner’s mail-in promotion for its first Star Wars action figures was the Early Bird Certificate Package.

Kenner launched the promotion in 1977 because it could not manufacture enough figures for the Christmas season after Star Wars became an unexpected hit. Customers bought a display package containing a cardboard display stand, a certificate, and promotional materials rather than a complete set of figures.

Children mailed the certificate to Kenner and later received four figures: Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and R2-D2. The package helped Kenner sell products while production caught up with demand.

It is often confused with the later Early Bird mail-in offer itself, but the package’s formal product name refers to the boxed promotion sold in stores. The promotion became one of the best-known stories in vintage Star Wars collecting.
