Disney’s major interactive toy-to-game platform released in 2013 was called Disney Infinity.
Disney Infinity combined physical figurines and interactive game software. Players placed character figures on a special base, allowing those characters to appear in the game. The first release included a Toy Box mode for building and sharing custom environments, along with separate play sets based on Disney and Pixar properties.
The platform expanded through additional figures, play sets, and editions. Later releases added characters and settings from Marvel and Star Wars, broadening Disney Infinity beyond its original Disney and Pixar focus.
Disney Infinity was discontinued in 2016. It is sometimes confused with ordinary Disney video games because its central feature was the connection between retail toys and digital play. That toys-to-game model was the defining merchandise innovation of the platform.
