Blue Origin’s first crewed spaceflight mission in July 2021 was named NS-16.
The mission launched on July 20, 2021, from Blue Origin’s Launch Site One in West Texas. Its four passengers were Jeff Bezos, Mark Bezos, Wally Funk, and Oliver Daemen. The flight used a New Shepard booster and capsule and lasted roughly ten minutes from liftoff to landing.
NS-16 crossed the internationally recognized 100-kilometre Kármán line, making the passengers space travelers under that widely used convention. Wally Funk, an aviation pioneer and member of the Mercury 13 group, became the oldest person to fly to space at the time.
The mission is sometimes casually called Blue Origin’s first passenger flight, but NS-16 is its formal mission designation. Blue Origin’s later crewed flights used other NS-series numbers.
