Beyoncé’s childhood singing group was called Girl’s Tyme.
Girl’s Tyme formed in Houston in 1990, when Beyoncé and several other young performers began competing and performing together. The group included LaTavia Roberson and Kelly Rowland, who later became members of Destiny’s Child. Their early repertoire and choreography were shaped by the vocal-group traditions that influenced many 1990s R&B acts.
In 1992, Girl’s Tyme appeared on the television talent program Star Search. They did not win, but the experience helped expose the group to a national audience and encouraged the members to continue pursuing music. The group later underwent lineup and name changes before becoming Destiny’s Child.
The name is often written with an apostrophe as “Girl’s Tyme.” It should not be confused with Destiny’s Child, the later professional group that became one of the best-selling female groups in music history.
