What was the name of Apollo 16's lunar landing region, the Descartes Highlands?
Answer
Descartes Highlands
Answer
Descartes Highlands
Apollo 16 landed in the Descartes Highlands on 21 April 1972.
The mission targeted a highland area near the lunar equator because scientists wanted samples of rocks thought to represent ancient lunar crust. Commander John Young and lunar module pilot Charles Duke explored the region, while Ken Mattingly orbited overhead in the command module Casper.
Apollo 16's landing site was near the Descartes crater and north of the Fra Mauro region visited by Apollo 14. The mission collected many rock and soil samples, deployed scientific equipment, and used the lunar roving vehicle to travel farther from the lander than earlier crews.
The Descartes Highlands were once interpreted as volcanic terrain, but returned samples showed that much of the area consisted of impact-breccia material formed by enormous collisions. That result helped refine ideas about lunar geology and the Moon's ancient history.
