What was the maximum video output resolution of the original PlayStation 3?

The story behind the answer

The original PlayStation 3 supported a maximum video output resolution of 1080p.

The console was designed for the high-definition television era and could output games and video at several resolutions, including 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. The actual resolution used depended on the game, the display, and the developer’s rendering choices; support for a resolution did not mean every game rendered internally at that resolution.

The PlayStation 3 also included a Blu-ray drive, making it an important early consumer device for high-definition film playback. Its HDMI output allowed compatible televisions and receivers to receive digital high-definition video and audio.

A common mix-up is treating 1080p as the universal resolution of PS3 games. Many titles used lower internal resolutions or different display modes to maintain performance, while the system itself could output a 1080p signal when supported.
