What was the launch price of the Xbox One console in the United States in 2013?

The story behind the answer

The Xbox One launched in the United States in 2013 at a price of $499.

Microsoft announced the console’s US launch price at its E3 2013 presentation. The launch package included the console, a wireless controller, and the Kinect sensor, which Microsoft initially treated as a standard part of the Xbox One experience. The system released in 13 markets on November 22, 2013, including the United States.

The $499 price is often confused with the later price of the Xbox One after Microsoft removed Kinect from the standard package. In June 2014, Microsoft introduced a Kinect-free Xbox One for $399 in the United States. That change made the console’s entry price match the launch price of Sony’s PlayStation 4, but it does not alter the original 2013 launch figure.

Xbox One later received revised models, including Xbox One S and Xbox One X, with different prices and hardware features. Those later prices should not be used for the original launch model.
