What was the launch-day name of the Xbox One's online service?

The story behind the answer

The Xbox One's online service was called Xbox Live at launch.

Xbox Live provided multiplayer gaming, digital purchases, downloadable content, voice communication, achievements, and other connected features for Xbox One users. Microsoft had already used the same brand for the original Xbox and Xbox 360, so the name carried forward into the new console generation.

The service was later rebranded as Xbox Network in 2021. That change distinguished the underlying online network from Xbox Live Gold, the subscription product that provided console multiplayer access and other benefits at the time.

Xbox Live should not be confused with Xbox Game Pass. Game Pass is a subscription library for games, while Xbox Live described the network and account infrastructure. Microsoft also offered Xbox Live on Windows PCs through related services, although console functionality and subscription rules varied by period.
