What was the highest UK Singles Chart position for Metallica's “Nothing Else Matters”?

The story behind the answer

Metallica's “Nothing Else Matters” reached number six on the UK Singles Chart.

Released on April 20, 1992, it was the third single from Metallica. The song stood apart from much of the band's earlier material through its clean guitar opening, orchestral arrangement, and reflective ballad structure. James Hetfield wrote it while missing the band during a tour, and Lars Ulrich later helped shape the finished composition.

Kirk Hammett does not play on the studio recording, although he appears in the music video and performs the song live with Metallica. Michael Kamen arranged the orchestral parts, and the London Symphony Orchestra appears on the track.

The UK chart result is easy to confuse with other territories. The song reached number one in Denmark and placed in the top ten in several European countries, while its U.S. Billboard Album Rock Tracks peak was number 11. Its UK Singles Chart peak, however, was number six.
