What was the highest chart position of The Doors' single 'Touch Me' on the Billboard Hot 100?

The story behind the answer

The Doors’ single “Touch Me” reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Written by guitarist Robby Krieger, “Touch Me” was released as a single in December 1968 and later appeared on the band’s 1969 album The Soft Parade. Its arrangement stood out from the group’s earlier recordings because it blended rock with prominent brass, strings, and a tenor-saxophone solo by Curtis Amy.

The song became The Doors’ last U.S. Top Ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Its number-three peak is sometimes confused with its performance on other charts: “Touch Me” reached number 1 on the Cash Box Top 100 and also topped Canada’s RPM singles chart.

Those different chart results explain why some sources or memories may cite number 1. For Billboard’s Hot 100 specifically, however, the correct peak position is number 3. The song also ranked number 49 on Billboard’s 1969 year-end chart.
