The first Star Wars video game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System was Star Wars.
JVC published Star Wars for the NES in 1991. The action game adapted the original trilogy’s story into a side-scrolling format, allowing players to control Luke Skywalker across stages inspired by locations and events from the first film. It was not the same game as Atari’s 1983 arcade title, even though both used the simple title Star Wars.
The NES version included platforming, combat, and character-focused abilities. Its design took liberties with the movie and condensed the story to fit a console adventure. Those differences are typical of licensed games of the era, which often translated films into genres rather than reproducing every scene exactly.
Later Star Wars games appeared on the NES and other systems, including versions based on The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Dark Forces was a later PC title, not the first NES release.
