“Spirit” was the first single released from Beyoncé’s 2019 album The Lion King: The Gift.
Beyoncé released “Spirit” on July 10, 2019, as the lead single from the companion album connected with Disney’s live-action film The Lion King. She curated and executive-produced The Lion King: The Gift, which brought together artists from Africa and the African diaspora with contemporary pop and R&B performers.
The song was written by Beyoncé with Ilya Salmanzadeh and Timothy McKenzie, known professionally as Labrinth. It appears in the film during a sequence involving Simba and the natural world, and its music video uses imagery associated with African landscapes and visual culture.
“Spirit” received nominations at the Golden Globe Awards and Grammy Awards. It is sometimes confused with “Brown Skin Girl,” another prominent song from the same album, but “Spirit” was the project’s initial single and its main promotional introduction.
