What was the first mountain named in the Genesis account after Noah's Ark came to rest?

The story behind the answer

The first mountain location named in Genesis is the mountains of Ararat, where Noah's Ark came to rest.

Genesis 8:4 says that the Ark rested upon the “mountains of Ararat.” The wording refers to a mountainous region rather than explicitly identifying one modern peak. Ararat is also associated with the ancient kingdom or land of Urartu.

Mount Ararat in modern eastern Turkey became the most famous proposed location because its name resembles the biblical term. However, Genesis does not say that the Ark landed on the summit of the single volcano now called Mount Ararat.

This distinction matters because popular retellings often shorten the biblical phrase to “Mount Ararat.” The more precise answer from Genesis is plural: the mountains of Ararat. Archaeological claims about discovering the Ark have not been verified.
