What was the first landform named as the Ark’s resting place in Genesis?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 uses the plural phrase “mountains of Ararat.” Ararat was an ancient region associated with the kingdom of Urartu in the Armenian Highlands. The biblical wording does not name a single peak, and it does not explicitly say “Mount Ararat.”

Later tradition often connects the Ark with Mount Ararat, the highest mountain in modern Turkey. That mountain became especially prominent in medieval and modern storytelling, exploration, and reported search claims. Those traditions are more specific than the wording of Genesis itself.

This distinction matters because “Mount Ararat” and “the mountains of Ararat” are not identical descriptions. Genesis identifies a mountainous region, while the singular peak is a later conventional association. The most precise answer to the biblical question is therefore “the mountains of Ararat.”
