Jack Hinshelwood scored twice in a 79-second spell. Maxim De Cuyper added another goal, while Aston Villa defender Victor Lindelöf scored an own goal. Villa’s afternoon became even harder when João Gomes was sent off before half-time.
Brighton’s four-goal first half was historically notable. They became only the fourth team to score four first-half goals in a Premier League Matchweek 1, following Bolton Wanderers in 2001, Manchester United in 2007 and Liverpool in 2020.
