What was the development codename for Microsoft's Xbox Kinect motion sensor?

The story behind the answer

Microsoft's Xbox Kinect motion sensor was developed under the codename Project Natal.

Microsoft introduced Project Natal at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June 2009. The project aimed to let players control games and entertainment using body movement and voice commands rather than a conventional game controller. Its name came from Natal, Brazil, the home country of Microsoft director Alex Kipman, who led the project.

The finished product was renamed Kinect and launched for Xbox 360 on November 4, 2010. Kinect used a depth-sensing camera, an RGB camera, microphones, and software that tracked players' bodies. Its launch lineup included Kinect Adventures!, which demonstrated activities such as obstacle courses and river rafting.

Project Natal is often mixed up with Project Milo, a separate experimental demonstration associated with Kinect technology. Project Scorpio was instead the codename for the Xbox One X, while Project Durango referred to the original Xbox One during development.
