What was the biblical name of the mountain region where Noah’s Ark came to rest?
Answer
Mountains of Ararat
Answer
Mountains of Ararat
Genesis says Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.
Genesis 8:4 uses the plural phrase “mountains of Ararat,” identifying a region rather than naming one specific peak. Ararat was associated with Urartu, an ancient kingdom in the Armenian highlands and surrounding areas. The biblical wording therefore does not explicitly say that the vessel landed on the summit now commonly called Mount Ararat.
Later Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions often connected the Ark with Mount Ararat, the prominent volcanic massif in eastern Turkey. The mountain became especially important in medieval and modern Ark-search traditions, but the exact biblical location remains uncertain.
This distinction is a frequent source of confusion: “Mount Ararat” is the familiar traditional location, while “mountains of Ararat” is the wording in Genesis. No generally accepted archaeological evidence has established that the Ark has been found there.
